    2013 Rhode Island Highlights

    Rhode Island hosted the Innovation Powered by Technology Conference attended by over 700 educators from across the state. Two blended learning charters opened their doors in September 2013 and districts began receiving grants from the Wireless Classroom Initiative, providing $20 million to expand wireless access to classrooms. RI is working with Northeast Comprehensive Center to create rubrics for evaluating blended and online programs.

    Current Strengths and Reform Opportunities

    • Rhode Island has no restrictions limiting class-size for digital learning environments, no restrictions on student enrollment, and students may enroll in an unlimited number of online courses
    • Rhode Island requires student performance data be used to evaluate the effectiveness of teachers
    • Rhode Island could consider tying final funding to course completion based on performance or competency
