Part 4: Virtual Education – Any Time, Any Place

This final message in our series to celebrate National School Choice Week focuses on the newest area of school choice – virtual education.  Last year, thanks to Florida’s lawmakers and Governor Scott, the Sunshine State passed legislation to create an educational environment that equips teachers and parents to customize education for each and every student in the Sunshine State through digital learning.

Because of their work last year, more virtual options are available for our students and more students are participating in those options. Florida Virtual School serves more than 150,000 students, with over 2,800 students enrolled full-time, and full-time district virtual education programs are serving over 4,600 students.  In addition, 15 school districts received applications to operate virtual charter schools next year. On October 18, 2011, Osceola school district approved the first two virtual charter schools for the 2012-13 school year.

All children can learn, but a one-size-fits-all approach to education will not provide each child with the skills and knowledge to succeed.  Florida’s leaders are using 21st century technology to revolutionize education by customizing and personalizing courses to meet each child’s learning style and pace
