The Atlantic’s 3rd Annual Technologies in Education Forum Explores the Benefits of Technology in the Classroom

WASHINGTON, DC

On Wednesday, May 15th, DLN’s John Bailey was asked to participate in The Atlantic Live’s third annual Technologies in Education Forum. The forum invited expert speakers to discuss technology’s ability to transform the way students of all ages learn.

John was invited to speak on the panel “Engaged Students and Game Based Learning”. The panel was moderated by Hannah Rosin, a National Correspondant with the Atlantic Live. Rosin recently explored the effects that technology will have on our youngest generation. Also on the panel were Justin Leites, Vice President for Games at Amplify, and Lisa Guernsey, Early Education Initiative, New American Foundation.

The panel focused on the educational benefits of engaging students in game-based learning, the social benefits of both entertainment and educational games, as well as answered questions from the audience.

FCC Commissioner Jessica Rosenworcel discussed her thoughts on the future of E-Rate. She discussed building on the success of E-Rate with an “E-Rate 2.0”, which would include capacity standards. She stated that she hopes by 2015, each school in the country gets a bandwidth of a hundred mega bits per thousand students.

Also featured at the event was Roberto Rodriguez, Special Assistant to the President for Education. He discussed the many benefits that can be realized by utilizing different technologies in the classroom, but also acknowledged the challenge in maintaining high quality standards.
